Why are my Pipes Humming?

Plumber adjusting bathroom pipes

Have you noticed that your bathroom pipes are making a humming noise? You may be wondering what could cause this to occur. There are several issues that could cause your pipes to be humming. At 412 Plumbing, we’ve put together a list of reasons your pipes could be humming to help you identify the issue so you can take proper action to have it resolved.

Causes for Noisy Bathroom Pipes

Water pressure is one of the most common culprits when it comes to humming pipes. If your home’s water pressure is too high, it can result in a humming sound within your pipes. The water pressure coming into your home shouldn’t be more than 80 psi. If you think this may be the reason for the humming, contact a qualified plumber to check that that water pressure is at the correct level.

Are the pipes humming when you flush the toilet?

This may mean that you have an issue with one of your valves. While the humming sound is present, shut off each valve. If the humming sounds stops, then the valve is the source of the issue, and you may need to replace the valve for the fill tank.

The issue may be a simple fix such as a degraded or damaged washer. To replace a washer, shut off the water feeding systems, unscrew the handle that is on the faucet, then unscrew the nut within. You will then remove the washer, replace it with a new one (be sure it is the correct size), and then put it back together.

The toilet flapper is at Fault

This is the rubber plug at the bottom of the tank. You can test your tank by adding a few drops of food coloring to the tank, watching to see if the color diminishes quickly. If it does, this means the water is leaving the tank when it should not be. If this does occur, the flapper will need to be replaced. You may be able to do this on your own, but it is recommended you call the professionals at 412 Plumbing to ensure the replacement is completed correctly.
